Port Askaig is the name of a small harbor town on Islay's east coast. Near the town is the Caol Ila distillery, which is Islay's largest distillery. The Caol Ila malt whiskey is known for its fruity character and dusty peaty taste. From Port Askaig, the coastline of the nearby Isle of Jura can be seen on a clear day.
It is this coastline that is the motif on the label of the Port Askaig bottlings.
Port Askaig Cask Strength is bottled at the classic alcohol strength from the beginning of the 20th century, namely Imperial 80 Proof. For those who may not be that old, it can be stated that it corresponds to 45.8% vol. in modern terms.
Port Askaig 25 Years Old
Islay Single Malt Whisky
Bottled at 45.8% vol.
Colour: Dark chamomile flower.
Scent: Orange liqueur, honeysuckle, American white oak and beeswax are the first fleeting aromas to be perceived. After this, the scent becomes more exotic with traces of honey melon, green bananas, cocoa and burnt precious wood.
Taste: Clean and powerful malt character. The rich character of soft oak reveals that this is an old fish. Citrus and orange are present along with sweet roasted malt sugar and some cinnamon. The aftertaste slowly becomes dry and quite dusty. Smoldering charcoal, potash, sweetness from the cask and fine oak tannins slowly round off a long journey back in Islay's history. A few drops of water accentuate the citrus character of this fine malt whiskey and give it a densely grown and fat character.
Comment: There is something very special about sitting with a glass of old Islay Maltwhisky and immersing yourself. The balance between the character of the distillery, the unique microclimate in the stormy warehouses and oak casks is incredibly successful in Port Askaig 25 Years Old.
