The Barossa Valley wine region is one of Australia's oldest and most recognized wine producing regions. The region is located in South Australia approximately 50 km northeast of Adelaide.

The wine industry in the area was founded by German emigrants/wine farmers back in the mid-1800s. This is still clearly seen by the dominance of the Lutheran Church in the area.

The best-known wine from the region is Barossa Shiraz, but Cabernet Sauvignon, Mataro (Mourvedre), Grenache and Viognier also contribute to the area's good reputation in the production of red wine.

Despite an image as a red wine region, some white wines are also produced, especially Riesling and Vermentino.
