Louis Roederer is one of the world's most recognized champagne brands and has been around since the mid-1830s. The house is located in the old royal city, Reims.
Champagne was incredibly popular among the upper class in Russia around 1850-60 and a particularly popular brand was Louis Roederer, which exported about 2/3 of its total production to Russia.
The house is probably best known for their prestige cuvée, Cristal. Cristal was created in 1876 and produced especially for the Russian Tsar Alexander II and is considered by many to be the first prestige cuvée.
The house owns 240 ha of vineyards, of which 214 ha are classified as either Premier Cru or Grand Cru and, on top of that, are considered some of the best vineyards in all of Champagne. So we're talking about the "top of the pop" here.
