The Garonne river divides Bordeaux into right and left banks. On the right are wines from Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, which primarily produce wine based on the Merlot grape (with Cabernet Sauvignon as second fiddle).

On the other hand, Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant grape on the left bank (with Merlot as second fiddle), which is dominated by communes such as Haut Medoc, Saint-Estephe, Margaux, Saint-Julien and Pauillac.
