Located two hours by car southwest of Barcelona. There is only one way into the 12x12 km small area, namely through the town of Taragona (by the way, you have to go out the same way).
Priorat consists of 12 smaller villages, 109 wineries and just over 500 producers.
Prior to 1990, Priorat was largely an unknown area, but has now become Spain's most luxurious wine-producing region.
The area does not receive more rainfall than North Africa and the soil, which is typically dark brown slate, emits a heat that gives minerals, fruit and strength to the grapes. Imagine a pot with slate stone.
The most important grapes are from old vines, mainly Carignan, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. These varieties can achieve intensity, spicy, concentrated, mineral rich and very dark and clean wines.
