Bowmore Distillery is located on the island of Islay on the west side of Scotland. Islay is one of only five whiskey regions in Scotland which is protected by law.
The island is known for the very special peat, which is used here to dry the wet malt in the kilns. This gives a whiskey with a very strong smoky taste. And that is why the island is one of the hubs in the world when it comes to whiskey production.
Bowmore is the island's oldest distillery and can be dated back to 1779. Other well-known brands on the island include Ardbeg, Lagavuling and Laphroaig.
Unlike the three mentioned, Bowmore produces whiskey with a lower content of peat and aged in sherry casks. This gives a more well-balanced whisky, which is far from being as smoky as from the other distilleries.
The malt on Islay is precisely - through the peat - known for the smoky style, which often results in a very smoky whisky. Here, Bowmore goes in a slightly different direction.
