Chardonnay is perhaps the world's most widespread - and well-known - green grape and the main ingredient in virtually all white wines. Still, there is a big difference in Chardonnay depending on where in the world the wines are produced, ranging from light to dark and from crisp to full-bodied.
The grape is a non-aromatic grape variety, and - unlike Sauvignon Blanc - does not have much taste in itself, but it is formidable in expressing the soil in which it is planted.
Chardonnay wines typically have notes of lemon, apple, almonds and hazelnuts, and have their origins in Burgundy, but are grown today in all parts of the world.
You often hear that "a glass of Chardonnay" is ordered - which tells you a little about how well-known and widespread the grape is. However, N ogle has had enough of the grape's popularity and uses the expression ABC: "anything but chardonnay" with barely concealed humor.
Fun fact: Where there is Chardonnay, there is also Pinot Noir.
