Jean Martell traveled from the island of Jersey to France in 1715. He began his career in retail and traded in various goods, including cognac was included in the assortment.

He was married twice, both times to a woman from a cognac family, and that way he got further into the cognac trade.
After five years, Jean Martell had achieved such success that he was exporting 40,000 casks annually. In the year 1815, his heirs decided to concentrate exclusively on the successful cognac trade. The company is managed today by the eighth generation of Martell.

The house's own vineyards of 400 hectares cover today only 5% of wine needs, so popular has Martell become. Contracts have been signed with 2,800 winegrowers who supply wine or finished alcohol. Martell buys around 60% of the alcohol from the Borderies, the smallest district of Cognac, and it is this that gives the nutty, sweet and floral notes that are so characteristic of Martell
