Typical characteristics of St. Julien wines are that they are soft, feminine, harmonious and flattering.

The soil is dominated by gravel, just like in Pauillac, but the gravel is finer-grained and contains less iron, which may help explain the differences in taste.

Virtually every spot in the area is suitable for growing wine, and the subsoil is very uniform.

Most fields in the region belong to the classified châteaux, but the few unclassified are more than excellent, so you can easily look for them and have an excellent glass of wine (tip of the day!).

The wines from St. Like its neighbors Pauillac and St.Estèphe, Julien is known for its durability. Today, the harvest is later than in the past, so that the grapes get greater maturity and thus less fruit acid. That is the wines can be drunk earlier, often after only 2-4 years. However, they still have good tannin, so they will develop in bottle, often 4-6 years for wines from good areas, maybe 8-10 years in bottle (ie 10-11 years from harvest year) for Cru Classé, maybe even further.
