No, Germany is not just Liebfraumilch. Today, 35% of German vineyards are planted with red wine grapes, primarily Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and the lesser-known Dornfelder.

The fact that Germany has inadvertently gained a reputation for producing sweet and cheap white wines is precisely due to Liebfraumilch, which in the mid-80s sold more than 175 million bottles per year. Furthermore, the wine had a reputation as a wine that sold to very young or elderly people.

Today, Germany has completely changed production and produces mostly dry white wines and focuses more on quality rather than quality.

In addition, the production of red wine has multiplied. Baden in southern Germany produces almost exclusively wines based on Spätburgunder, while Dornfelder is produced in Rhineland-Palatinate and Rheinhessen.

There are currently 13 recognized wine regions in Germany:

    • Ahr mostly red wine on Spätburgunder
    • Baden 's southernmost and 3rd largest region with Spätburgunder and Müller-Thurgau
    • Franconia 's most planted grape is Müller-Thurgau, but the region best known for Silvaner
    • Hessische Bergstrasse smallest region and produces the most wine for local consumption
    • Mittelrhein mostly white wine on Riesling
    • Mosel 5th largest region with some of Germany's best Riesling
    • Nahe mostly white wines on Riesling
    • Palatinate second largest wine region and most white wine
    • Rheingau Riesling dominant and some of the most prestigious in Germany
    • Rheinhessen largest wine region with ¼ of Germany's total production
    • Saale-Unstrut northernmost wine region from the former East Germany
    • Saxony 's easternmost region and most white wine
    • Württemberg 4th largest region mostly on red wine and a lot of local consumption and interest
