With very few exceptions, every state in the United States produces wine. However, California accounts for 90% of all US wine production, leaving little room for other states, including Oregon and Washington.
The Californian red wines are known for their high quality, reliability and diversity. California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world. Here are nearly 100 grape varieties grown on nearly 100 wine-growing areas with dozens of different microclimates and soil types. In addition, there are some very individualistic winegrowers here - many with international experience - which gives even more diversity.
Oregon is characterized by very small wine producers who rarely produce more than 10,000-15,000 cases per year, so the focus is more on quality than quantity. The two most common grapes here are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as the climate in Oregon is very similar to the climate in Burgundy.
