Claude Thorin Cognac was founded by André Thorin and the house's vineyards are all within the Grande Champagne region, which is the finest appellation in Cognac. The vineyards are planted with canes of Ugni Blanc, but also a large part of the fields are planted with the Folle Blanche grape. After the outbreak of the vine louse in the 1860s, most growers chose not to plant Folle Blanche anymore, preferring to use the high-yielding Ugni Blanc. However, André Thorin went his own way and therefore planted the rare Folle Blanche grape, which gives his Cognacs a very special taste of "the good old days". Incidentally, this also applies to his Pineau des Charentes.
In 1988, son Claude Thorin took over the running of the estate, and over the past twenty years, Thorin's fields have grown in size, and are today six times larger, producing a wide range of Cognacs created with respect for the old traditions and traditional methods.
Claude Thorin Cognac today
Today, the house is still run by André's son Claude and his wife Nathalie Thorin. In their range you will find everything from VS (minimum 5 years in cask) to XO (minimum 25 years in cask), which are all made from Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche, and only from Grande Champagne. Claude Thorin also makes older Cognacs with an age of up to about 45 years.
As well as producing a wide range of Cognac, Thorin has also planted vines with the Colombard grape. These are used together with Ugni Blanc to produce Pineau des Charente in different colours.
