Needless to say, the champagne is blended with grapes exclusively from Grand Cru fields, and on top of that, some of the best to be found in all of Champagne.

In the mid-1800s, Louis Roederer exported approx. 75% of their production to the Russian upper class, including the Tsar family.

Just like today, it was then extremely dangerous to be at the head of Russia and the various tsars were naturally afraid of being eliminated by the enemies.

At that time, all champagnes were produced as black bottles with a hollow bottom for use by the thumb when pouring.

The sitting Czar told Louis Roederer that if he was to continue drinking their champagne, he wanted it in a transparent bottle without a hollow bottom. He was simply afraid that his enemies might hide explosives, either in the bottle or in the hollow bottom.

And that's how Cristal was born .......... and it sure is :-)
