The Australian wine industry is the world's fourth largest exporter of wine at around 750 million liters per year. The wine industry is a significant contributor to the Australian economy in terms of production, employment, exports and tourism.
Wine is produced in almost every state, but Australia's wine regions are primarily in the southern, cooler parts of the country. These include South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland. These wine regions produce different grape varieties and styles that take advantage of the climatic differences and soil types. The major varieties are predominantly Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon, Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc.
The wines are often labeled with the name of their grape variety, which must make up at least 85 percent of the wine.
