The Wachau Valley is home to wine and culture and part of the World Heritage Site. Located in Lower Austria on the Danube west of Vienna and Krems.
The area's vineyards consist of 1,350 hectares and are mostly planted on even very steep slopes and largely only with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
Vinea Wachau is an association of winegrowers in the area. The association got serious about the extensive wine scandal in 1985 and therefore only admits members who comply with the strict Austrian wine law to the letter.
Among other things, Vinea Wachau has introduced a classification system based on the alcohol content of the wines: Steinfeder are light wines with an alcohol percentage below 11.5; Federspiel has an alcohol percentage of between 11.5 - 12.5, while the powerful wines with a percentage above 12.5 are called Smaragd.
