Vodka is a clear alcoholic drink that contains 35-60% alcohol. Vodka is most often made from rye or wheat - however, there is also vodka made from potatoes or molasses. Vodka of excellent quality should be drunk neat.
A true classic, which has been known as the national drink in Russia since the 14th century, where it is thought to have been mentioned for the first time.
Vodka was gradually invented, developed and refined in the areas that today make up Russia, Poland and Ukraine. Each country claims to be the inventor of vodka, but the truth is that it happened gradually throughout the area. To this day, however, there are slight differences in the production of vodka in the respective Russia, Poland and Ukraine.
Where in Russia and Eastern Europe the vodka is primarily drunk chilled and neat – often as an accompaniment to food, in Western Europe it is more common to mix with flavorings. Eg. for drinks like Screwdriver, White Russian, and Bloody Mary.
And then of course there is James Bond's vodka-martini version "shaken, not stirred"!
