Ropiteau Frères

Ropiteau Frères is located in Meursault, which is the area where some of the world's greatest white wines are produced. The winery was founded in 1848 when France underwent a revolution. The area of ​​Burgundy, along with other provinces, was less affected by the rebellion than Paris and therefore quickly became a meeting place where people met to create a modern world in peace and freedom.

In the same year, the railway came to Burgundy and Jean Ropiteau founded the winery with his brother-in-law on this basis. The only 24-year-old Jean quickly realized that transport was an important basis for promoting the distribution of his Burgundy wines.

The vineyard continued to develop and in 1940 Jean's great-grandson, Auguste Ropiteau, bought the current cellars, at the same time he bought several vineyards from the Hospice de Beaune for a treat, as the time around the start of the Second World War was not favorable for the wine trade.

In the village cemetery, Jean is buried next to his wife Marguerite, whose gravestone bears the inscription: "Sauva les Genevrières", which refers to this woman's tireless struggle to preserve the Premier Cru classification for the area. This foresight and great effort from the Ropiteau family gives them a special status among the producers in the area to this day.
