With its 15,900 hectares, Baden is the 3rd largest and southernmost wine region in Germany. Sandwiched between Alsace in the west, the Black Forest in the east and Switzerland in the south, the area stretches for about 400 km - from Lake Constance in the south to Heidelberg in the north.
Baden is known for its many different soil types, which therefore produce many-year wines even within the same grape variety. The most well-known and cultivated white wine grapes are Müller-Thurgau, Blauburgunder and Weisser Burgunder.
However, the most widespread grape variety in Baden is the red Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), which covers 35% of the total cultivated area.
