Lagavulin (pronounced lagga-voolin) is one of the southern distilleries on Islay. Several have stated that Lagavulin is one of the strongest whiskeys on the market, it is at least among the 3-4 whiskeys that have the biggest peat/pepper/smoke attack when you put it in your mouth. The 16-year-old version of Lagavulin is a member of UDV's (Diageo) classic malt series, where it represents the Islay region. This makes it terrific with its deep peat/smoke flavor and soft sherry body. Compared to other whiskeys in UDV's Classic Malts of Scotland series, Lagavulin manages to hit the Islay region in the areas that most whiskey lovers associate with Islay whiskies, a whiskey that is heavily smoked with notes of sea, seaweed, peat, pepper and salt. Lagavulin is a true classic, and especially in relation to the price - it's a ridiculously low price to pay for such a good and full-bodied whisky.
