Chateau de Pierreux - Simply impressive!
In the spring of 2019, we went on a trip to Burgundy with some good customers. On the last day, on our way to the airport in Lyon, we happened to pass by the Chateau de Pierreux, a castle located in the heart of Brouilly. A beautiful hilly landscape, with vineyards and well-grown rose bushes in the most beautiful mix.
We didn't expect much from this visit, - everyone was very tired after the farm day's many vinous impressions in Burgundy, which had blessed us with a large number of delicious fat Chardonnays from Ropiteau's cellars, as well as countless Pinot Noirs in older vintages, perfectly ripe, and from some of the best fields in Côtes-de-Nuits.
It soon became apparent that the meeting with Chateau de Pierreux would change the perception of what the Beaujolais region can also produce.
Geographically, Brouilly is the Cru Beaujolais, spanning the largest area of the Beaujolais region, from Mâcon in the north to Lyon in the south.
The castle's history dates back to the beginning of the 16th century and belonged to Thibault de Pierreux at the time. Subsequently, the castle has changed hands several times, but is today owned and run by the famous Mommessin family, who often use the impressive property for private events.
The castle is located at the top of a small hill with a unique panoramic view. To the east you can see the plain of the Saône and all the vines of the Brouilly appellation, and on a clear day Mont Blanc can be seen in the distance. To the north, the view is blocked by the impressive Mont Brouilly, an old extinct volcano that Chateau de Pierreux uses for their red Gamay grape.
After a larger tour of the castle and its wine cellar, it was time to taste the two wines that the castle produces. A red Gamay and a white Chardonnay. Chardonnay is found almost everywhere where wine is produced, but a Chardonnay from Brouilly is not seen that often…… and what a shame, because this is certainly a very delicious wine, which can compare with the fine Burgundies tasted the day before. Bold, creamy and heavy – and yet light and crackling with a crisp edge, followed by a touch of lime and citrus. The finest balance, with a perfectly rounded finish. Quite simply IMPRESSIVE!
This was followed by the red one. We expected a dry round with a good amount of tannins, which the Gamay grape is known for, but no! Here we were suddenly sitting with a wine that had depth and elegance. In the glass a beautiful red color, bouquet of blackcurrant, blueberry and a full balanced fruity style. Juicy fruit with dryness and blueberries. The tannins are soft and rounded. Wow!
Our perception of Brouilly had changed completely in just 30 minutes, and we are therefore very proud to be able to welcome Chateau de Pierreux as part of our family.
