New Zealand makes a lot of great wines today. The most widespread and best are undoubtedly Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, as far as the whites are concerned, and Pinot Noir for the reds. New Zealand is a very "new" wine country, and it is known today that the first vine was planted by missionaries back in 1919. Since then, production has only increased, and so has exports. Most vineyards are located on the East Coast, which provides the optimal growing conditions, as the fields here are protected from the strong westerly winds. On the other hand, most fields are close to the sea, which provides a slightly cooler climate, which is optimal for Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
